4 Signs you Should have a Sump Pump in Your Basement

Hibu Websites • Apr 29, 2021
a sump pump

Before you can know if you need a sump pump, we need to discuss what a sump pump is. A sump pump is a machine that can keep your home from flooding by doing away with the buildup of moisture and by removing accumulated water in what is called a sump basin. Having a sump pump installed can keep your basement safe from flooding, water damage, and foundation damage. Below you will find four ways to know your home would benefit from a sump pump installation.

1.Identify your Soil

Soil type is an essential factor in determining the efficiency of your water drainage. If the kind of soil you have traps water it can cause a build-up of moisture and eventually damage your property.

Sand, silt, and clay are the three main types of soil that you will usually deal with. Sandy soil has large particles which means water can drain through smoothly. Silt soil has medium-sized particles which means it is somewhere in the middle between clay and sand. For this reason, this soil holds on to water longer and may cause some damage depending on how long the water sits. Lastly, clay soil holds the most water out of the three kinds due to its particle size. Clay particles are very small, porous particles that have the capacity to absorb a lot of water. This will usually cause water to soak up and make its way down to the lower parts of your home, potentially causing damage.

2. How is your Land Graded?

Depending on how the land that makes up your property is graded the water could flow towards your home’s foundation and basement by extension. In order to fix the issue, you will have to have your property leveled by a professional. In this situation, a sump pump can come in handy for capturing water that has seeped into your home and redirecting it away from your basement to keep your building dry.

3. Does your Area Experience a lot of Precipitation?

If your area experiences significant amounts of rain or snow, it’s important that you prepare yourself for your basement flooding. One thing that would help is if you educate yourself on how much precipitation you can expect in your area every season. You’re also going to want to know if your basement floor is on the water table. To find out if your property is located in a watershed or flood zone, you can check your area’s flood zone map.

4. Has your Property Dealt with Water Damage in the Past?

If your basement has a history of flooding, there’s a good chance it will get flooded again. Find a safe place for the valuables you may be keeping in the basement. This would be another situation where installing a sump pump would help your keepsakes from accumulating moisture and growing mold. Although water damage can come from weather conditions, don’t ignore the possibility that faulty appliances may also be a cause of flooding. Perform regular maintenance checks on your appliances to make sure there are no leaks coming from valves, hoses, or joints.

How often will you need to Replace Your Sump Pump?

If you’ve decided to invest in a sump pump to protect your home against flooding and mold, you have the choice to either install one on your own or contact a licensed professional to do the installation for you. We highly recommend you consider a professional for your job to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Why is Your Basement Humid?
By Hibu Websites 31 Dec, 2020
We all know that feeling. That thick, sweaty, uncomfortable feeling of a humid basement. If you walk into your basement and you get that humid feeling, it may be too high. The reason for this is because concrete basement walls are porous and if the soil surrounding your home is saturated with water, pressure builds which can result in a weakening in the integrity of your walls. This force is called hydrostatic pressure, which results in moisture infiltrating the basement. If you notice dampness in your basement or if the walls feel clammy, you may want to invest in a dehumidifier while you troubleshoot the outdoor issues causing your humidity problems with drainage techniques. Make sure you have Proper Grading When constructing a new home, the land is usually graded so that it slopes away from the foundation which helps the moisture away from your home. Unfortunately, over time, erosion and soil compaction can alter the grading and make it less effective. It can actually begin to slope towards the house and the foundation. If this is your case you should make sure to act on it as soon as possible. You can fill in the surrounding dirt to correct the direction of the grading. In the event that you have improper grading on your concrete slab patio or driveway, you may need to have the concrete replaced. Replacing the surrounding dirt with gravel may also go a long way in reducing the hydrostatic force on your basement walls and improves the drainage conditions in your property. Exterior Drainage is Important Using gutters is ideal as they are intended to move the rainwater away from your home. When gutters are clogged, rainwater will start to spill over the edges and drip toward your foundations. Make sure your gutters empty three feet from your foundation. If this doesn’t happen, try attaching gutter extensions so the water moves farther away from your home. Landscaping too close to your home can create drainage problems. Make sure your plants are at least two feet from your foundations so that while you water your plants you’re not saturating your foundation with water. Using these tips do what you can to protect your foundation from water damage. If you start noticing issues like stair-step cracks in walls, or mildew and mold growth between cinder blocks, it might be a good idea to contact a trusted, licensed professional to inspect your home for water damage. Worldwide Waterproofing and Foundation Repair is here to help! Our professional inspectors and technicians will make sure your home is safe from water damage. Call today!
